Top Poker Tournaments

Poker is a growing and increasingly popular activity and poker tournaments are popping up all over the map. But which are the top poker tournaments? How can you choose from so many options? There are a few poker tournaments that stand head and shoulders above the rest.

The most popular poker tournament of all is arguably the World Series of Poker. Already a major event for poker players, the World Series of Poker was launched into the stratosphere by cable television. Traditionally featured on ESPN, coverage of the event brought in huge amounts of viewers, which in turn brought an explosion of entrants to the tournament. The World Series of Poker was originally held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino in Las Vegas. Recent tournaments have been held at one of the Harrah's Entertainment properties.

Another well-known poker tournament is the World Poker Tour. The World Poker Tour is a series of poker tournaments that feature the world's best professional players. Started by television producer Stephen Lipscomb, who now serves as the CEO for WPT Enterprises, the tour has its debut in 2002 and climaxed with the WPT Championship in April 2003. Making its television network debut on NBC in February of 2004, the "Battle of Champions" aired opposite the Super Bowl pre-game show.

Both of these events are essentially a series of Texas Hold 'Em tournaments. Players either buy in for a few thousand dollars, or win a seat in the early satellite tournaments held in casinos and online. The major draw for these events is that anyone with the buy-in or the skills to win can go up against the best poker players in the world.
