Poker - Eye Contact

When it comes to playing poker and playing it well, eye contact is crucial. No matter what you are holding in your hand, if you don't make firm eye contact with the other players, your uncertainty about winning will show. Positive body language is important when playing poker and strong eye contact is all part of good body language: skilled poker players will learn how to read your eyes and you will need to be able to hide what is really going on inside your head when sitting at the poker table.

 

Emotions like surprise, nervousness, anger, and disappointment are easily conveyed with a glance and many people are unaware that their eyes say far more than they realize. Yet, when it comes to playing poker, it is imperative that you become conscious of what your eyes can give away and you must then develop your poker face. You will need to practice and become aware of what your eyes may convey when you are making eye contact with another. A good way to practice is by using a mirror and to really watch how your eyes react when you smile or frown.

 

Alternatively, you can start developing your poker face and mastering your eye contact techniques by watching others on a regular basis. Note how peoples' eyes light up when they are happy or how they seem to dim when they are either sad or doubtful. Also note how someone's eyes change when they are being playful or when you have caught them in a lie. Such observances can truly help you read other peoples eyes when making eye contact at the poker table.
