Poker Betting Strategy
(Q) Can you recommend a good betting strategy for a beginner?
Absolutely! As a beginner, your best betting strategy is to take a moment before you decide whether or not to bet and figure out if you have the best possible hand at the table. If you're not sure, don't bet - at least, not until you feel ready to use bluffing as a betting strategy.
How do you know if you have the best hand at the table? Look at the board. What is the best possible hand that can be created with what is on the table? What cards are needed to create the best hand with the board? Do you have any of those cards? If not, what is the best hand that can be created when combining what's in your hand with the board? Can that be easily beaten? How many different hands, or how many different cards, could make those better hands?
When you consider what the best hand is that you could create, you are at the same time determining what the best hand the other players can make. This is an essential betting strategy in poker. What your opponents have in their hands and how they use it affects your game as much as the cards in your hand and how you use it.
If you think you have the best hand possible, then raise slowly and be prepared to re-raise. Suck in the other players and build up the pot. If you have a good hand, but not the best and you decide you want to give it a shot, go ahead and bet big. A large raise early in the hand will push out the other players who are undecided as to whether or not they have what it takes to win the pot.
If you want it, go for it! Unsure? Try again next time.
